ART AND CULTURE

Just a few kilometres inland from Tirrenia is Pisa, a world-famous art city. Pisa is renowned worldwide for Piazza dei Miracoli, the square with a group of monuments declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and a sublime example of the area’s Romanesque architecture.

Further south along the coast is Livorno, a port city rich in history and culture. Well worth a visit is the Giovanni Fattori Civic Museum, dedicated to the famous Macchiaioli painter, and the Civic Archaeological Museum, where you can admire exhibits from Etruscan and Roman times, as well as the Middle Ages. In Livorno, you can explore the characteristic Medici Canals that surround the Old Town, and head up to the Fortezza Nuova to enjoy unique views across the city.

As well as the cities, there are plenty of little villages to explore in the area around Tirrenia, offering endless opportunities for art and history lovers. Take a trip to Cascina, and visit the Archaeological Museum to admire some fascinating Etruscan and Roman exhibits, or Vicopisano, an ancient village with a famous fortress by Brunelleschi, where you can admire the 13th-century castle that belonged to the Medici family.

And if you fancy venturing a little further afield, an hour or so from the Resort is Volterra, an ancient Etruscan town known for its alabaster objects; or you might like to explore the beautiful San Miniato, a mediaeval village perched on a hill, with a Romanesque cathedral and splendid views across the Val d'Elsa.

TUSCAN ARCHIPELAGO

Just a few kilometres from Tirrenia, the Tuscan Archipelago is a natural paradise that is a must for nature and adventure lovers.

Each of the seven islands in the archipelago has its own unique features, and the unspoilt little bays, wild natural landscapes and rich biodiversity will leave you speechless.

A boat trip around the islands offers a host of treasures to admire: from the enchanting Elba Island, famous as Napoleon’s place of exile and for its mining history, to the wild, natural beauty of Gorgona.

Take a stroll through the picturesque villages of Capraia and Montecristo, delve into the ancient history of Pianosa, and marvel at the unrivalled beauty of Giannutri.

 FOOD AND WINE

Tuscany is renowned worldwide for its rich culinary tradition and outstanding food and wine. The province of Pisa is no exception, and is the ideal destination for tourists who love good food and wine.

Get ready to enjoy exceptionally fresh fish dishes. Try cacciucco alla livornese, a rich, flavourful fish stew, or the famous bottarga.

As well as fish, our area offers a variety of typical inland produce. We can recommend schiacciata pisana, a savoury flatbread with tomatoes, olives and anchovies, or lardo di Colonnata, a delicious pork lard with an intense flavour. Make sure you try the pecorino cheeses made on the surrounding hills, accompanied by a nice glass of the local white wine. 

In Tirrenia and in the surrounding area, you’ll find plenty of restaurants, trattorias and holiday farmhouses where you can enjoy genuine local cuisine. You can take part in tasting sessions in the local wineries, or take a look around the street markets and traditional shops that sell deliciously simple, genuine produce.

SPORT 

The Tirrenia coast, the Tuscan Archipelago and the surrounding area offer outdoor activities for all tastes.

Water sports fans can dive into the marvellous waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea to explore the rich variety of underwater plant and animal life. You can take part in snorkelling outings for all levels, from beginner upwards. Or you might prefer to set sail on a boat, lulled by the sea breeze. You can sail along the coast, explore the islands in the Tuscan Archipelago and enjoy breathtaking views. Numerous sailing schools also offer courses and boat hire. Thrill-seekers who fancy riding the waves of the Tyrrhenian Sea will find a number of surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing schools.

If you’re more of a landlubber, the area around Miramare Resort offers a large network of trekking paths suitable for all levels of experience, as well as plenty of panoramic routes for cycling aficionados. You might like to explore the Migliarino and San Rossore Natural Park and the hills of Pisa and Livorno, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the uniquely varied Tuscan scenery.
